Diversity news : from the US Supreme Court to tips and new fonts - The Allyance Newsletter
The Allyance newsletter provides many useful references on recruitment, diversity and inclusion.
Morning everyone,
I am honored to inform you that The Allyance team is growing. We just appointed Belody Luo as our very first Client Partner, Executive Search & Leadership Advisory.
Belody has more than 10 years of professional experience spent in global top leadership advisory firms and European SaaS start-ups as consultant and manager. At The Allyance, she will help companies build the best in class talent strategy to identify, develop and hire the top executive talents at a global level. She will not only focus on Tech and Product but will hire professionals in HR, Marketing, Finance, Security and strategic topics.
Belody and I met when she was working at PayFit. It’s the second time I am hiring a former client. And, I feel really good about it 😎
You can read my full statement about her arrival here.
✅ The Allyance newsletter provides many useful references on recruitment, diversity and inclusion. What follows are some stimulating articles about the end of affirmative action, interrupting unconscious biases, an accessible font for low-vision developers, ChatGPT & DEI and product experts’ salaries.
✊🏽 No one is happy about diversity at work
Last month, the Supreme Court of the United-States ruled that affirmative action in college admissions was unconstitutional. According to the judges, it is unconstitutional to consider race to eliminate bias in the selection process. It was one the principal tools for diversity of the nation’s most selective schools such as Harvard and the University of North Carolina.
Following this decision, the debate moved to the workplace : “There are people who say, ‘I really wish we were more diverse,’ and I’ve also seen people say, ‘Stop being so woke”. The Wall Street Journal wrote an important article about the concerns expressed by underrepresented groups and the new HR strategies of American companies when it comes to DEI.
“At a time when employees are being asked to do more with less, spending time in diversity-training workshops and courses is a hard sell, says Movell Dash, founder of Modas Personal Development, a DEI consulting firm.”
🛠 The best bosses’ tips to interrupt bias
Since the launch of The Allyance, the training program which I deliver the most is one about fighting unconscious biases at work. I always make sure to share additional references after the training session. I want to make sure people challenge the way they think and act.
Rather than sharing tips on hiring a diverse team (it’s in the article though 🤫), let’s focus on how to manage on a day-to-day basis in an inclusive manner. Managers, leaders, HR, this one's for you!
Set up a rotation for office housework, and don’t ask for volunteers.
Mindfully design and assign people to high-value projects.
Acknowledge the importance of lower-profile contributions.
Respond to double standards, stereotyping, “manterruption,” “bropriating,” and “whipeating.”
Schedule meetings inclusively and equalize access proactively.
👀 A new font for low-vision developers causes drama
Changing habits is never easy. This article from Fast Company offers a good reminder with the example of a new font which caused rifts on Reddit. The font is called Intel One Mono. As its name implies, “it was designed by tech giant Intel, together with New York-based type design practice Frere-Jones Type and marketing agency VMLY&R. It joins a group of monospaced fonts designed primarily for developers—think JetBrains Mono, Fira Code, and Consolas.”
By definition, monospaced fonts consist of characters that have the same width and occupy the same horizontal space, making it easy for coders and programmers to tell the difference between long strings of characters.
“But here’s where Intel One Mono stands out: it was designed with and for low-vision developers. It’s free to download on GitHub and will soon be available on Google Fonts, too.”
🔍 4 ChatGPT prompt examples for Human Resources
I have spent a lot of time recently reading about recruitment tools in order to update my techniques. So far, nothing blows my mind concerning ChatGPT. I am concerned it will emphasize bias in the long-run if OpenAI does not fix it. However, one article from Brian Heger shares 4 prompts which are easy to use. One of the prompts he writes about will help you detect biased language in a job description:
“Please review this job description and let me know if there are any words or terminology that could be biased and which may discourage any particular demographic of applicants to apply.”
